Have you been experiencing a pinching pain or discomfort in your spine? A herniated disc in your spinal cord and associated bone systems could be the problem. When the fibro cartilage of the spinal column experiences a rupture in one or more of its discs, it leads to a bulging and herniated disc. If this happens, it is important to diagnose the actual cause of the pain immediately and treat it with minimally invasive procedures that are quick and effective.
What Are the Causes and Symptoms of Bulging/Herniated Disc?
Most spinal pain is caused by one of two underlying problems – a pinched nerve or a disc pain. Only upon medical diagnosis can you determine whether or not the pain is being caused by these problems. In case of a pinched nerve, it is not that the herniated disc itself is causing the pain but that the disc is applying pressure on a nerve. Known as a radicular pain, these are common in the lower back, neck, and legs. Disc pain on the other hand is when the herniated disc is painful and is known as axial pain. These symptoms are most common in the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine and most likely occur in the lower back.
How Is a Bulging/Herniated Disc Treated?
Medical diagnoses of herniated discs are performed in multiple stages at our center to determine the nature and extent of the pain. First, we order a physical examination that includes testing nerve functions in the arms or legs, testing muscle strength, and checking for pain with motion or palpitations. Our doctors then review your symptoms and study the location and description as well as certain positions or activities that are causing pain to determine the actual cause.
We also take a thorough look at your medical history to figure out whether a previous diagnosis or a past disease could be the problem. We recommend diagnostic tests such as CT scans, MRIs, or Discogram depending on availability and need. Herniated discs are treated with a combination of pain management, spinal fusion surgery, and/or physical therapy at the Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute.
