Carotid and Transcranial Doppler Studies in Miami, FL
Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute is one of South Florida’s leading treatment centers specializing in the diagnosis, treatment and management of neurological conditions. Our physicians sometimes prescribe carotid and transcranial doppler studies to help diagnose certain conditions. The neurologists and neurosurgeons at our Aventura, Kendall, Hialeah, and Fort Lauderdale offices deliver expert, personalized care in a welcoming environment.
Carotid and transcranial doppler (TCD) studies measure the velocity with which blood flows through the vessels in the brain. The simplicity and speed offered by both the tests make them highly effective diagnostic tools.
When Are Carotid and Transcranial Doppler Studies Recommended?
Carotid and transcranial doppler studies are used in the diagnosis of neurological conditions such as brain death, hemorrhage, intracranial stenosis, and collaterals. TCD is also used in screening children who suffer from sickle cell disease. The tests are also used in the analysis and prevention of strokes.
How Are Carotid and Transcranial Doppler Studies Performed?
Carotid and transcranial doppler studies are non-invasive and painless, so no anesthesia is required. A special gel and transducers are applied to your skin by our technician. The transducers are placed on your temples, the back of your neck, the base of your skull, or your eyelids. The equipment emits sounds that represent the blood flowing through your blood vessels during the test. The procedure takes about 60 to 90 minutes, after which the transducers are removed and your skin is cleansed. After proper diagnosis, your doctor discusses your treatment options.
What Are the Benefits of Carotid and Transcranial Doppler Studies?
Carotid and transcranial doppler studies are safe and more reliable compared to other examinations.
