What is a Cartilage Injury-Meniscus Tear?
A meniscus is a cartilage disk located on both sides of the knee, and act as cushions or “shock absorbers” to minimize the stress on the articular cartilage, the cartilage in the knee joint that actually coats and cushions the ends of the bones. If the two meniscus disks are damaged or torn, the articular cartilage becomes more prone to stress. Note that severe or advanced injury to the meniscus may trigger osteoarthritis.
What are the Causes and Symptoms of Cartilage Injury-Meniscus Tear?
Meniscus tissue is non-regenerative, which means it has very little ability, if any, to heal itself. Like many of the tissues in our bodies, the meniscus disks are continually injured by “repetitive micro-trauma,” or repetitive motor injury. Throughout our lives, every step and fall that we have taken, or twist of the knee or ankle that we have experienced, has applied pressure to the meniscus, eventually causing these disks to wear out and tear. Sometimes the meniscus is injured by simple acts, like suddenly turning, reaching for something, or kneeling down to pick up something. It is no wonder that meniscus-tear injuries are most common in athletes and older adults.
How is Cartilage Injury-Meniscus Tear Treated?
The majority of cartilage injuries, or meniscus tears, do not require surgery. In some cases, the meniscus tear may be repaired, or simply removed. If your injury requires surgery, our team of qualified, experienced orthopedic surgeons and specialists are available with the latest, state-of-the-art technology in treating these types of injuries.
