Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical process that involves the implantation of electrodes inside the brain. The electrodes send electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain, regulating any abnormalities in those parts. A pacemaker-like device is implanted under the skin to regulate the amount of stimulation created by the electrodes.
The procedure produces remarkable therapeutic benefits for several disorders that are otherwise resistant to treatment. Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute houses the latest in surgical equipment and technology. Our specialists are board certified and experienced in neurosurgery – providing you with a safe environment to undergo surgery and recover quickly.

Medical Conditions That Can Be Treated with DBS
DBS was approved by the FDA in 1997 for the treatment of essential tremor. The FDA approved DBS for Parkinson’s in 2002 and for the treatment of dystonia in 2003.
The procedure has also been credited with providing effective treatment of chronic pain and depression in several noted medical studies. The process is currently being studied as a treatment for cluster headaches, epilepsy, and Tourette syndrome. Further, in patients suffering from schizophrenia, DBS has been found to promote cooperation, increased alertness, and euphoria.
Its usefulness also comes from the fact that DBS does not harm the brain tissues and can be stopped/altered anytime.
What Can You Expect of the Procedure?
The implantation of DBS electrodes is a surgical procedure that typically takes under four hours to complete. It’s an anesthesia-free surgery because your doctors need your help while implanting the electrodes. Your scalp is numbed so that you are both awake and pain free during the procedure.
During the procedure a small hole will be drilled in your skull for the placement of tiny electrodes in your brain. A pacemaker-like battery-powered device will be implanted in your chest. The neurosurgeon will connect the pacemaker to the electrodes via a wire under your skin. Your doctor may choose to perform the surgery in two steps: a) implant electrodes in the brain in one surgery and b) place a pacemaker under your skin in the second surgery.
