EEG (Electroencephalogram) in Miami, FL
Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute is one of South Florida’s leading treatment centers specializing in the diagnosis, treatment and management of neurological conditions. Our physicians sometimes prescribe an EEG (Electroencephalogram) to help diagnose certain conditions. The neurologists and neurosurgeons at our Aventura, Kendall, Hialeah, and Fort Lauderdale offices deliver expert, personalized care in a welcoming environment.
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test used to measure electrical waves in the brain to determine brain function over a period of time. The waves are measured using electrodes or sensors that are placed on your scalp. The sensors detect the electrical signals produced by neurons in your brain. The signals are then transmitted to a machine that records the electrical activity.
When Is an EEG Recommended?
EEG tests are recommended for diagnosing the following conditions:
- Major brain disorders such as tumors, seizures, or stroke
- Brain death
- Sleep disorders
EEGs are also effective for diagnosing improper brain function that causes the following:
- Problems with memory, reasoning, and thinking
- Extreme weakness in a specific part of the body
How Is an EEG Performed?
Patients lie down during the procedure to ensure accurate results. The technician attaches approximately 20 sensors to the scalp with special, non-reactive glue. The EEG lasts between 20 to 40 minutes, and the patient must remain still during the test.
What Are the Benefits of an EEG?
An EEG is a safe, non-invasive, effective diagnostic test that enables a doctor to accurately locate the source of brain-related medical conditions, such as infection, tumor, or bleeding.
Different types of diagnostic procedures we specialize in:
- Carotid and Transcranial Doppler Studies
- EMG (Electromyography)
