Pituitary tumors cause several hormone-based problems. If left untreated, they swell to a large size and begin exerting pressure on the major arteries, as well as nerves located at the base of the brain. Loss of vision can also occur in such patients. The removal of the tumor is a surgical process.
At Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute, your surgeons ensure the pituitary removal surgery and your recovery thereafter is problem-free and quick. Advanced technology and minimally invasive procedures are used to get you back on your feet as soon as possible.
Medical Conditions That Can Be Treated with Endoscopic Transsphenoidal Procedures
Transsphenoidal surgery is one of the four standard methods used in the treatment of pituitary tumors. Your doctor may suggest the surgery in any of the following conditions:
- Tumor growing from the pituitary gland
- Tumor growing from the cells surrounding the pituitary stalk
- Benign cyst growing between the lobes of the pituitary gland
- Tumor growing from the membrane surrounding the spinal cord and the brain
- Malignant bone tumor growing at the base of the skull
What Can You Expect of the Procedure?
The surgery is minimally invasive. You will be given general anesthesia. Surgeons insert an endoscope (a thin, tubular instrument with a lens, a light, and a tool for removing the tumor) into the nostril. Three small openings at the base of the bony floor are made along the way. Once the pituitary gland is exposed, the surgeon removes the tumor tissues and then closes the bony holes.
The transsphenoidal procedure is largely safe but, like most surgeries, entails some amount of basic risk. In preparation for the surgery, our institute doctors will explain the procedure and its benefits and risks to you. Ask as many questions as you like – you’ll feel more confident about the procedure. Discuss the medications you currently take and other concerns you may have.
After the surgery, your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing will be monitored closely. A day or two after the surgery, your doctor will check your hormone levels and other vital signs, provide you with discharge instructions, and allow you to go home.
