Epidural Steroid Injections in Miami, FL
Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute is one of South Florida’s leading pain management treatment centers, designed to help patients effectively manage painful neurologic and spine-related conditions via epidural steroid injections. The neurologists and pain management specialists at our Aventura, Kendall, Hialeah, and Fort Lauderdale offices deliver expert, personalized care in a welcoming environment.
Epidural steroid injections (ESI) can alleviate sciatic and leg pain when other non-surgical treatments fail. ESIs contain a combination of local anesthesia and corticosteroid which are ideal for inflammatory conditions.
When Are Epidural Steroid Injections Recommended?
Epidural steroid injections are an ideal treatment for inflammatory conditions. Because of the strong nature of the injection, ESIs are generally not used unless all other modalities (oral medications, physical therapy, etc.) used to treat lumbar spinal stenosis and related conditions have failed.
How Are Epidural Steroid Injections Administered?
MRI, CT scans, x-rays, and other imaging tests are performed to determine the precise location of the pain. The epidural steroid injections are administered into the spinal column around the epidural space, the nerve roots, and spinal cord. The local anesthetic provides immediate pain relief, and the corticosteroid reduces inflammation and swelling. Each injection provides relief for up to three weeks.
Side effects may include the following:
- Swelling of the throat, tongue, lips, and face
- Respiratory problems
- Swelling and discomfort around the injection site for up to 48 hours
What Are the Benefits of Epidural Steroid Injections?
ESIs quickly relieve pain and swelling caused by a variety of conditions. The injections also reduce the pressure on inflamed nerves and soft tissues.
