The facet joints connect the vertebrae with one another and enable forward, backward, and twisting movement of the spine. When these facet joints degenerate, enlarge, or compress, it results in a condition called spinal stenosis in which the nerve roots and the spinal cord compress. Most commonly the pain is in the lumbar region but may occur at any level of the spine. Facet thermal ablation is a minimally invasive procedure to treat facet joint degeneration and alleviate pain.
When Is Facet Thermal Ablation Recommended?
Facet thermal ablation is usually recommended to treat the following conditions:
- Degenerative facet joints
- Facet joint syndrome
- Facet arthritis
- Facet disease
- Facet hypertrophy
How Is Facet Thermal Ablation Performed?
During a facet thermal ablation, your doctor uses a special laser to remove damaged tissue from the facet joint and deaden the associated nerves. The procedure requires general anesthesia and takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete. You remain at our office for one to two hours before being released.
What Are the Benefits of Facet Thermal Ablation?
Facet thermal ablation is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing unwanted facet tissue and deadening the nerves in the joint that cause pain. There is little scarring as the facet thermal ablation incision is small and the laser is directed only on the affected facet joint, without risking the area surrounding it. This is an outpatient procedure and can typically be performed in less than an hour.
