Commonly known as “water on the brain” or “hydrocephaly,” hydrocephalus is a condition marked by an unusual buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. The fluid accumulation causes swelling in the ventricles of the brain. The resulting pressure on the brain can lead to severe mental disability, life-threatening complications, and other medical conditions.
What Causes Hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is caused by the impaired flow, reabsorption, and excessive production of CSF in the brain cavities. The condition is more common among seniors and infants. Hydrocephalus can be congenital – either genetic or acquired in the first few months of life – or the condition can be caused by certain infections, tumors of the brain, intracranial hemorrhage, meningitis, and head trauma.
What Are the Major Signs and Symptoms of Hydrocephalus?
In infants, the most noted signs of hydrocephalus are an enlarged head and downward-gazing eyes. Early symptoms include frequent vomiting, seizures, irritability, and sleepiness.
Signs in older children include significant changes in the spacing between the eyes and other facial features. Spasms, restricted/slow movement, crossed eyes, shrill cries, slow growth, and difficulties in feeding, bladder control, and temper control are other symptoms in older children.
Common signs of symptomatic hydrocephalus in seniors are dementia, loss of bladder control, and gait instability.
How Is Hydrocephalus Diagnosed and Treated at Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute?
Early diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus in infants and children has been shown to reduce complications such as learning disabilities and epilepsy. After treatment, adults and seniors experience restored function.
Our doctors are skilled experts in the surgical interventions used to treat hydrocephalus, which include cerebral shunts to drain the excess CSF into a different cavity of the body. An opening in the third ventricle of the brain may also be used to drain the fluid.
