What Are Migraines?
Migraines are a complex condition characterized by a throbbing or intense pulsating headache. They are diagnosed by their pain; the number of attacks, which is typically more than five, lasting anywhere between four and 72 hours if left untreated; and accompanying symptoms.
Migraines are triggered by a number of factors. These include genetics, bright lights, fatigue, hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, lack of food, and anxiety, among other factors. Weather changes have also been known to trigger the condition, with studies indicating that changes in barometric pressure prior to tropical storms can cause migraine attacks in susceptible individuals.
What Are the Symptoms of Migraines?
In addition to intense pain on one side of the head, the other common symptoms of migraines are as follows:
- Sensitivity to Light (photophobia)
- Sensitivity to Sound (phonophobia)
- Numbness, Tingling, or Pins and Needles in Legs and Arms
- Speaking Difficulties
Our migraine specialists evaluate your unique symptoms and develop an individualized treatment plan. We provide our undivided attention and answer all of your questions patiently and clearly.
How Are Migraines Treated?
There is no singular or absolute treatment for migraines. Acute migraine treatment stops the progression of a headache. Preventive treatment lowers the frequency and intensity of the migraine attack. Our migraine specialists will diagnose your specific condition, assess the extent of disability associated with it, educate you on your condition, and propose the best plan of action to assist you in managing the discomfort of this complex and often debilitating condition.
