Radiculopathy is a condition in which one of your spinal nerves is compressed or pinched. When any of the nerves surrounding the spinal cord is damaged or affected in any way, it may exert additional pressure on the nerve roots of the spinal cord, resulting in severe pain in the back and neck. The pain may worsen slowly and eventually impact body movement.
What Causes Radiculopathy?
Radiculopathy is a neuropathy that occurs when a spinal nerve is pinched or compressed by the surrounding tissue. The nucleus of the spinal disc, due to damage or degeneration of the disc, exerts pressure on the nearest spinal nerve, thereby compressing it and causing severe pain in the region. Sometimes protruding or extra growth of bones around the vertebrae can also result in compressing the nearby nerves, creating pain.
Radiculopathy usually affects people over the age of 30 and can even be caused due to underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and rheumatoid arthritis. The condition can also be genetic and is known to affect pregnant women.
How Do We Diagnose & Treat Radiculopathy?
Compression of the spinal nerve can happen due to many reasons including spine-related disorders and underlying medical conditions. To treat this condition effectively and manage the pain it generates, accurate diagnosis is essential.
Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute neurologists will conduct a series of tests and assessments to find out what has caused the nerve compression. Once the diagnosis confirms the condition and the underlying cause, they will recommend a course of treatment that can involve medication and therapy to alleviate pain and the use of minimally invasive surgical methods to remove the unwanted tissue compressing the nerve or to replace the damaged or degenerated vertebral discs.
