Regenerative medicine is a cutting-edge form of non-surgical treatment used for the treatment of chronic pain known. Regenerative medicine, or regenerative injection therapy (RIT), is a treatment for chronic pain caused by injuries that fail to heal appropriately.
Injured tissues that are known to respond effectively to regenerative medicine include:
- Intervertebral discs
There are two main types of regenerative medicine:
- Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
- Stem-Cell Therapy
Traditional steroid (anti-inflammatory) injections work by reducing pain and inflammation at the target tissue. These injections, however, do not promote healing of the injured tissue thus pain and inflammation often return to the affected area. Regenerative medicine works by promoting the body’s natural ability to heal itself, enhancing recovery of the affected tissues and resulting in decreased pain.
Regenerative medicine can be effective alternatives to other treatments such as oral anti-inflammatories, steroid injections, epidurals and in some cases surgery. Often one injection can be enough to achieve adequate results. However, these injections may be repeated to further enhance tissue repair if the effect from the previous injection was positive, but sub-optimal.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?
During PRP injections, a sample of your blood is taken under sterile conditions. The blood is placed in a centrifuge, which spins the blood. Blood cells are separated from the plasma, creating a solution with high concentration of platelets known as PRP. Platelets contain packets of natural growth hormones and proteins that promote restoration of blood flow, new cell growth, tissue regeneration, and ultimately results in rebuilding of healthier tissue.
What is Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem Cell therapy is the use of your body’s own stem cells to regenerate tissue and healing in your body. Stem cells contain the platelets, growth factors and proteins found in PRP, however, stem-cells are capable of converting to various types of cells found in the targeted tissue. This, in turn, gives the stem-cell regenerative medicine a higher healing potential when compared to PRP.
