Scoliosis can be defined as an unusual curvature in the spine. While most spinal cords are straight when viewed from the anterior, scoliosis can make it appear curved. When viewed from the side profile, a spinal column should depict a soft curvature around the upper back in normal people. A person with scoliosis can show a curved spine from the front and back views where it is supposed to be straight.
What Are the Causes of Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is found in many types, the reasons for which vary from person to person. One of the most common forms of scoliosis includes congenital scoliosis that was caused by abnormalities in the bone during birth. Neuromuscular scoliosis is caused by abnormal nerves or muscles and is frequently evident in people with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and other conditions that are commonly associated with paralysis. Degenerative scoliosis is caused by traumatic injuries, osteoporosis, bone collapse, or major surgeries. Idiopathic scoliosis, the most common type, has no specific cause. While there are several theories about idiopathic scoliosis, none have been conclusive and most doctors and experts today believe that this form of the condition is genetic.
How Is Scoliosis Diagnosed and Treated?
Unusual curvatures in the spinal column like scoliosis are commonly diagnosed in school during regular screening exams. Some of the most common traits of a child having scoliosis include uneven shoulders, uneven waist, a prominent shoulder blade, and other spinal elements leaning strongly on one side. The diagnosis and confirmation of the type of scoliosis can be done at the Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute with a bone examination and x-ray to measure the curvature and its severity.
In most cases, scoliosis is treated during adolescence when it is most commonly observed. Some of the most common treatments for scoliosis that our doctors offer include spinal braces that align the bones in the right direction before their growth stops and fusion commences. In more serious cases, we may also recommend corrective surgery to align the spinal column as close to normal as possible. We may use metallic implants and bone grafts to complete the procedure.
