Back and leg pain can be caused by inflamed or compressed nerve roots in your spinal cord. Selective nerve root block (SNRB) injections are can be used to diagnose and treat back and leg pain associated with the spinal column.
When Are SNRB Injections Recommended?
When the pain in your back and legs is caused by inflamed or compressed nerve roots in your spinal column, an SNRB injection may be recommended. When MRI scans fail to identify the affected nerve roots, SNRB injections can be used to isolate the source. The procedure is commonly recommended for pain management associated with ruptured discs located outside the spinal canal.
How Are SNRB Injections Administered?
The nature and severity of your symptoms determine the combination of anesthesia and steroids that are used for your SNRB injections. An x-ray is used by your doctor to precisely administer injections of lidocaine and anti-inflammatory steroids. When the injection results in pain relief, your doctor has successfully identified the source of your pain. Injections may be repeated every few months but no more than three times each year.
What Are the Benefits of SNRB Injections?
Decidedly more complex to administer than epidural steroid injections, selective nerve root block injections provide short-term relief for those suffering from chronic back pain.
