By definition, a stroke occurs when your brain’s blood supply is unexpectedly interrupted or reduced. This sudden lack of blood can lead to damage in the brain tissues due to lack of oxygenated blood and nutrients. Within minutes of a stroke, your brain cells start dying.
What Are the Symptoms of a Stroke?
The most common symptoms of a stroke include the following:
- Trouble with vision
- Trouble with walking
- Partial or complete paralysis of face and extremities
- Trouble with speech and comprehension
It is important to call for immediate medical attention when you experience symptoms of a stroke.
How Are Strokes Treated?
Strokes are treated only using a thorough examination of the medical history, emergency CAT scan, and physical examination. The first step to treating a stroke includes stabilizing your breathing patterns and determining the extent of the damage. Depending on the cause of the stroke, intravenous drugs are administered to remove clots, and in case of hemorrhages, the ruptured artery is clipped and any additional blood is drained. If you suspect someone may be experiencing a stroke, ask them the following questions to confirm the symptoms of stroke.
- Ask them to smile. If one side of their face droops, call for help immediately.
- Ask them to raise both arms together and check if one drifts downwards.
- Ask them to repeat a phrase and check for slurred speech or strange reactions.
