Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute is one of South Florida’s leading pain management treatment centers, designed to help patients effectively manage painful neurologic and spine-related conditions via sympathetic nerve blocks. The neurologists and pain management specialists at our Aventura, Kendall, Hialeah, and Fort Lauderdale offices deliver expert, personalized care in a welcoming environment.
Sympathetic nerve blocks are one of the most advanced treatments offered at Advanced Neuro and Spine Institute. The treatment is considered fairly new and experimental, but many successful cases have been documented in recent years. Sympathetic nerve blocks work by directly targeting the sympathetic nerve system, a group of nerves that connect your spine to various parts of your body. The sympathetic nerve system controls involuntary body functions, such as the following:
- Blood flow
When Are Sympathetic Nerve Blocks Recommended?
Sympathetic nerve block injections are ideal for Raynaud’s syndrome, blood vessel spasms caused by frostbite, excessive sweating, chronic abdominal pain, and complex region pain syndrome. Like most other nerve block injections, sympathetic nerve block injections are used for both diagnosis and pain relief. The injections are useful for numbing the nerves that are responsible for involuntary functions, especially after traumatic injuries.
How Are Sympathetic Nerve Blocks Performed?
For your comfort, anesthesia is administered prior to the procedure. Using x-rays, your doctor locates the exact position of the target nerves that requires injections. If your doctor locates any inflammation or other problems, other medications, such as steroids, may be administered. You may be required to refrain from eating or drinking heavy beverages for up to six hours before the procedure to avoid complications.
What Are the Benefits of Sympathetic Nerve Blocks?
By targeting the group of nerves outside the spine, sympathetic nerve injections manage chronic pain and other conditions in the lower and upper body.
